The Great Ocean Road itself starts at Torquay, about 100 kilometres and an hour and a half from central Melbourne. Follow the coast from there to the Twelve Apostles and you have covered about 280 kilometres since leaving the city, roughly four and a half hours of driving without a single stop. The quickest way back runs inland through Colac in about three hours twenty. A classic day tour drives exactly that loop, which explains the numbers on every tour page: close to eight hours on the road and a day of 11 to 14 hours door to door.

That sounds tiring, and reviews confirm it is a long day. It still works because the stops break up the drive and someone else handles the bends between Lorne and Apollo Bay. If you would rather sleep somewhere along the coast, the multi-day tours spread the same route over two or three days.

What a classic day looks like

Go West Tours and Bunyip Tours collect guests from central Melbourne hotels between 7:00 and 8:00 and keep their groups to a maximum of 24. Morning tea is served near Torquay, followed by the Memorial Arch, a search for koalas, lunch in Apollo Bay and a walk among the tree ferns at Maits Rest in the Otways. The afternoon is for the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and, when conditions allow, the Gibson Steps down to the beach below the cliffs. A dinner stop in Colac breaks the drive home, and the operators give a return to Melbourne of about 20:30 to 21:30.

Wine Hop And Coastal Tours plans 13 hours 30 minutes for its day. It starts with the surf beach at Torquay and a view across to Bells Beach, then stops at the Pole House, the Great Ocean Road sign and a place to see koalas and parrots before lunch in Apollo Bay. A guided forest walk follows, then the Gibson Steps, tide and wind permitting, the Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. The tour page lists 14 languages for following along, and in busy periods a larger vehicle may be used.

Small groups and full coaches

Group size changes the day more than the route does. Hike & Seek takes 4 to 11 guests, meets outside the NGV at 180 St Kilda Road rather than at hotels, and turns the usual order round: it drives to the Twelve Apostles first, walks the 70-metre staircase of the Gibson Steps, and then heads into the Otways for a one-kilometre walk to Beauchamp Falls and a stop among the Californian redwoods before Apollo Bay, Kennett River and Lorne. Lunch is at a café and paid by you.

Oceania Tours and Safaris also caps its minivan at 11. It starts at 8:00 from selected city hotels or the Mercure Melbourne Southbank, lunches in Apollo Bay and visits the grounds of the Great Ocean Road Ecolodge to look for wildlife. Ride Tours is only open to travellers aged 18 to 35, with at most 18 on board, and includes the beach below Gog and Magog and a look at the Razorback.

The mid-size coaches sit in between. Autopia Tours leaves from a meeting point in the city, serves morning tea at a wetland where kangaroos and emus graze, and includes a guided rainforest walk; guests need to be able to walk unaided for one to two hours, and luggage is limited to one 5 kg day bag. Explore Australia Tours starts earliest, with pickups from 6:00 to 6:30 and coffee in Anglesea.

At the other end are the large coaches. Bus and Coach Charter runs a stop at a chocolaterie, the Memorial Arch, Lorne, the Cumberland River lookout, lunch in Apollo Bay and koalas on the Barham River Road. From October to April it spends up to 90 minutes at the Twelve Apostles, with an optional helicopter flight at extra cost; from May to September it adds London Bridge instead, with a chance of sunset. The helicopter page explains how that add-on works.

The long drive and what reviews say about it

The same few points come up again and again. Guests who board at the last pickup can end up on the seats over the wheel arch for the whole day. On the large coaches, people at the back wait for everyone else to get off at each stop and lose a few minutes every time. The road between Lorne and Apollo Bay is full of bends, so if you get motion sickness, ask for a seat near the front. Reviews of some coach tours also describe fast driving through those bends, and on one tour a return to Melbourne close to 22:00.

Check what a tour promises against what it can guarantee. Several itineraries list the Gibson Steps, but the park authority says beach access there changes with weather, tides and safety conditions, and one reviewer in October 2026 found the steps left out on a tour that named them. Koalas are likely at the usual stops, never certain, and reviews mention animals seen from the roadside or kangaroos far off on a golf course.

At the Twelve Apostles

The new Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre opened to visitors on 16 October 2026, with a café, gallery and rooftop terrace. Anyone arriving by car now has to book before arriving to secure a parking space, free of charge until April 2027. Tour operators get a guaranteed bus bay, so on a tour there is nothing to book yourself. The park authority notes that the lookouts are busy all year and most of all around midday, and quieter early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

A classic day tour arrives in the afternoon, which is when the crowds have peaked or are starting to thin. Tours that drive inland first reach the Apostles in the morning instead, and sunset tours stay into the evening. The page on reverse and sunset tours compares them. For the site itself, see the Twelve Apostles.

Through the seasons

The tours run all year, but the day feels different in each half of it. Around midsummer the sun sets at the Apostles at 20:52, so the light lasts well beyond the drive home. On 21 June it rises at 07:46 and sets at 17:13, and a tour that reaches the coast after lunch has a few hours of daylight left. Cape Otway, the nearest long-term weather station, averages 21.5 °C in January and 13.0 °C in July, with about 15 rain days in July and 6 in January. Melbourne is usually warmer than the coast in summer, by about four degrees in January, so pack a layer even on a hot day in the city.

The Victorian school summer holidays run from 21 December 2026 to 27 January 2027, and the Easter break from 26 March to 9 April 2027. Expect fuller tours and busier lookouts in those weeks, and book a few days ahead. All the tours on this page can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. What travellers say about the koala and rainforest day tour

4.7 (6,474 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated

★★★★★ Suratha (United States) · October 2026

Theo is a fabulous guide and made the day very enjoyable. … He shared interesting history and facts along the way and primed us well before each stop so that once there we could explore at our own pace rather than be stuck together and herded around like sheep.

★★★★★ Lewis (United States) · October 2026

… We saw both koalas and kangaroos thanks to our guide’s expert knowledge of the area. 12 Apostles was fantastic; as a photographer I appreciated that we were allowed some time to explore at each of our stops … OH! I still can’t stop thinking about the Scallop pie from Apollo Bay.

★★★★★ Edel (Ireland) · October 2026

… Pat our guide was superb & had infinite patience with people who were constantly late. Fantastic to see Koala’s in the wild. A long day but well worth it. Highly recommend

★★★★★ Robert (Belgium) · October 2026

Tour offering was great, however joining as a couple on the last pick-up we had the seats on the wheel arch for the whole trip. Also, part of the reason of joining this tour was the fact that it included Gibson steps … his response was that I could make my own way back there and that there was only an hour at the apostles. …

★★★★★ Sanju (India) · October 2026

Could have been more spaced out. Stops could have been at locations were coffee shops are located. It was just an ok trip. Not value for Money.

Guides and the wildlife sightings draw most of the praise. The complaints are about seats for late pick-ups, a Gibson Steps stop that is listed but not always made, and a long day.

Questions travellers ask

How long is a Great Ocean Road day tour?

Between 11 and 14 hours from pickup to drop-off. Close to eight of those are spent driving, because the round trip from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles is roughly 500 kilometres.

Is lunch included?

Usually not. Most tours stop for lunch in Apollo Bay, where you buy your own, and include only morning tea. Ride Tours includes tea or coffee and the Autopia reverse tour on our reverse tours page brings a picnic lunch.

Will we see koalas?

Most tours stop at a place where koalas live in the trees, often near Kennett River, but wild animals are never certain. Reviews mention koalas seen from the roadside and kangaroos only at a distance.

Do I need to book the Twelve Apostles myself?

No. Since the new visitor centre opened in October 2026, private visitors book a car park slot, while tour operators have a guaranteed bus bay. Your tour covers the arrival.

Can children join?

It depends on the tour. Children under 3 cannot join the Explore Australia Tours day or the medium-sized group tour with the lighthouse stop. Oceania Tours and Safaris takes children from 4, and Ride Tours is only for travellers aged 18 to 35.
